Suzanne Vega - Song: Blood Makes Noise Album: 99.9F°

After her 1990 album Days of Open Hand was met with a tepid response, Suzanne Vega found herself looking to shake up her signature sound. Collaborating with producer Mitchell Froom, she released 99.9F° in September of 1992. By mixing her brand of folk rock with synths and drum machines, the album could have easily been a disaster for Vega. Instead, it creatively reinvigorated her career and the sonic experimentation of the LP was a criticial and commerical success.

Arguably the album’s finest track (although the wistful “In Liverpool” comes pretty close), Blood Makes Noise is an industrial-flavored shot of enegry. Thematically, Vega is once again exploring the quiet everyday breakdowns that she covered in “Cracking.” But what makes this song more than just a rehash of that previous work is an urgency that is conveyed through Vega’s breathy vocals and the thump-thump-thumping of the unforgettable melody. Froom and Vega would later reteam for 1996’s Nine Objects of Desire, a collection of sultry gems and everyday portraits that was partially inspired by the pair’s courtship and subsequent marriage. (They have since divorced). Even though their love has long since faded, Blood Makes Noise is a souvenir from the start of their union…and a song that finds Vega at the height of her musical powers. - Bigfoot
