In 1991, I was a teenaged girl living at home with my parents. Johnny Carson was still the host of the Tonight Show and was still cool as hell - even though his out-of-touch-ness shows with his bewilderment at Morrissey.
Anyway - I’m glad I was a teenager when I was and I remember not being able to fall asleep after watching this. It was the first time that I saw Morrissey on American network TV. He sang, “Sing Your Life” and “There’s a Place in Hell For Me and My Friends.”“There is a place
Reserved
For me and my friends
And when we go
We all will go
So you see
I’m never alone
There is a place
With a bit more time
And a few more
Gentler words
And looking back
We will forgive
(We had no choice
We always did)”Happy Birthday Morrissey!
“Morrissey had to leave, but we do have Jerry Vale for you.”
I remember this vividly. I have never seen a TV performance with as much energy coming from the performer and the audience. Viva Morrissey!
